Punched or perforated tissue paper originated in the ancient Chinese culture and was later crafted in Europe as pecked paper. In Mexico, during the times of the grand haciendas, imported goods could be purchased at the local shops, where Chinese paper products were very popular. Craftsmen in Huixcolotla, Puebla, began producing their own version of these goods, applying their skills and creativity to this new craft: Papel Picado.
In the native Mexican culture, the gods of water, rain, and the underworld were traditionally depicted on their altars through gures painted on bark paper (amate).
Later, these gures were replaced by sheets of punched tissue paper representing the departed on the Day of the Dead. Punched tissue paper has become a very popular craft that is very typical of our culture and is now known around the world.

Materials: The leather used in this collection are treated with 100% vegetable materials. This means that different natural products are used in its tanning process instead of using chemicals that are harmful to the environment. These natural products are usually branches of trees and plants, such as chestnut and tara, sticks, roots and nuts, which are powdered and used to tan leather. The anilines used to color your bag, like the waxes that create the two-tone effect, are of plant origin. For this reason, any irregularity that is noticed in the skin is the effect of the natural process. As a suggestion, do not expose your bag to the sun for a long time as some oxidation could be noticed in the color, as happens with fruit.

Care: Carlota pieces are made with high-quality materials, and therefore should be treated with care, and protected against the elements. Due to the delicate nature of the materials, daily use can cause scratches and scuff marks on the surface, so we recommend you treat it with care. The leather is submitted to an important natural dye process, and the suede lining is pigmented with natural anilines, so we recommend that you be careful with any light-colored items that may come into contact with it.

If soiled, carefully clean the surface area using water and soft detergents. To keep your leather products in optimum condition, clean with a soft dry cloth, or, if necessary, have them professionally cleaned.

About Carlota

Carlota Camacho Hall was a strong and generous woman who showed her talent as one of the most acknowledged Mexican painters of her time. She loved Mexico deeply, and captured it in her oil paintings which are now respectful and lovingly displayed in the regional museums of the Comarca Lagunera, located in the north of Mexico.

These handbags are part of a limited edition, handmade by local artisans of the state of Jalisco, and decorated with traditional Mexican folkloric motifs. Each of the designs are inspired by a specific and representative element of our culture. Through this piece of fine craftsmanship, the Crabtree family acknowledges and honors Grandmother Carlota for instilling in her descendants the love for their homeland, exalting it through art and beauty. We hope you enjoy this piece that symbolizes the wonders of Mexico!

At the moment, Carlota works with twenty artisans from Guadalajara Jalisco. They make the bags by hand from the tanning of the leather to the making, following an artisanal process. The artisans have more than twenty years of experience in the leather industry.
