BARRO NEGRO FROM SAN BARTOLO COYOTEPEC

Barro Negro is considered one of the most popular and rigorous styles of pottery in Mexico. According to the locals, black clay has been manufactured in Oaxaca since A.C.. At that time, dirt was used to create these objects, but they did not work well. For example, if they were used as vessels to carry water, it would leak. To improve its hardness, artisans began to burn the clay over low heat in underground ovens with wood logs. The first pieces of this material were found in Monte Albán (a large pre-Columbian archaeological site) in matte grayish tones. There are also traces of use of this material in the Zapotec and Mixtec cultures of the Central Valleys, which thrived on more resistant materials.
